Meet the Q Family: Sam

Meet Sam.

Shooter, editor and everything in-between.

Favourite children’s book: Asterix the Gladiator – a fairly obscure series of comics with great illustrations that were enough to keep me reading until I was old enough to get the jokes.

Website you visit the most: Google.ca of course.…but actually either tsn.ca or youtube.com

A free day is spent: Working on some personal projects, whether video or music related, and ideally getting outdoors for some exercise.

Biggest pet peeve: None, I love pets…

Dream project: Probably a music video with a creative young artist who makes great music and is trying to get their name out there, but ideally is humble and collaborative and has a decent-sized budget to ensure a high production value.

Definitely sounds like I’m dreaming, doesn’t it?

A dinner party with any three people, dead or alive – who’s at the table? Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay – but it’s a potluck.

What did you want to grow up to be? An NHL player’s agent or a lawyer. Traditionally the latter leads to the former, but then…

Why aren’t you doing any of those things now? …I discovered how much time and money law school would require, and thankfully opted to go a more creative route.

If you could be a character in a movie – who would it be? Ron Burgundy, mostly for the unbelievable flute abilities.

What’s your “Q” connection? Andrea Horodyski – she started at Q not long before me, taking the reins as our fearless production manager, and reached out to a faculty member at Ryerson (Brian Withers) looking for an assistant editor to come on for the summer. Brian put my name forward, the summer came and went, and I’m still here!

What do you like most about working at Q? The culture and the people who create it. In my experience it’s very rare to find such a supportive and co-operative work environment that is also productive, efficient and keeps a high standard of quality. Q is unique in the ownership each person takes and the accountability we have to one another, while also providing a safe space for creativity to flourish and a place where people want to come in to work every day.

Most memorable Q project: Each project is memorable in its own way, but one that stands out is a video that we created for Wellspring (which provides supportive care, at no cost, to cancer patients and their families), to be shown at a fundraising event. The video highlighted the story of a young man who grew up playing hockey at a high level and who was diagnosed with cancer as an 18-year-old. The way he was able to fight through the physical and mental aspects of his illness on his road to recovery with the help of Wellspring was very inspirational, and I think both my own love of hockey and the way the video was received at the event are what make it especially memorable for me.

What makes you happy? Finishing introspective questionnaires!
